  • Acknowledgements | Broken Top Goats

We believe it is important to recognize our role as having a business platform. We acknowledge both the disparities in our world and the challenges faced by those people, as well as the indigenous people who involuntarily gave their land to our purpose. Acknowledgements Equity, Inclusivity, and Diversity Broken Top Farm believes that we all have a role in making this world a better place, every day, little by little. We have a platform of a business, we are a role model for some, and we are a public resource for goat knowledge. Having these platforms provides opportunity to do the important work, the hard work. Until its no longer hard work to stand up for what's right for all. We do not make these moral choices because any one group of people is superior. Rather, we hold these values because there are far too many groups of people being oppressed, silenced, murdered, and ignored. We take responsibility to honor and value diversity. We recognize the challenging steps towards justice and accept our responsibility in being equitable. We offer inclusivity and accessibility with an open mind. We support minority businesses. We respect and consider a variety of cultures and religions. We recognize the many inequalities and systematic put-downs that minority groups deal with on a day-to-day basis. Improvement in all these areas is a life-long feat. We're here to promise that we will always try to do better. While we may never be able to see every perspective - all perspectives will be heard, respected, and sympathized with. You are valued here. You are welcome here. You are supported here. Indigenous Land Acknowledgement Broken Top Farm is rested among the homelands of the Klamath Tribes: the Klamath, the Modoc, and the Yahooskin-Paiute people. The Klamath tribes resided on these lands long before we can imagine. They provided for the lands, and the lands provided to them. In 1864, a treaty was signed with the United States government to allow fishing, hunting, and water rights to settlers. They surrendered nearly 22 million acres, leaving their tribes with only 1.5 million acres. Despite this tremendous reduction, the Klamath tribes became some of the wealthiest and most successful in the country. In 1954, the federal government broke their treaty and passed the Klamath Termination Act. This removed all land rights, concessions, and protection from the federal government. Despite the tribes having an overwhelming vote against this. The purpose of this harmful act was simply to allow the federal government access to the abundant resources in the area. In 1986, after many years of lobbying and perseverance, the Klamath tribes regained federal recognition and restoration. However, the Klamath tribe was not granted any physical lands back, only their recognition. They were the only tribe to have this condition. Today, the Klamath Tribes are one of nine sovereign, indigenous nations in Oregon. The mission of the Klamath Tribes is to protect, preserve and enhance the spiritual, cultural, and physical values and resources of the Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin-Paiute people by maintaining the customs and heritage of their ancestors. They teach, “naanok ?ans naat sat’waYa naat ciiwapk diceew’a” - We help each other; We will live well.” We respect the forceful sacrifices made by these people and many others. We help each other. We will live well.

  • About Us | Broken Top Goats

A bit of our history, who we are personally, and other animals that ill our lives with joy and purpose. About Us Who Are We? Broken Top Nigerian Dwarf Goats is owned and operated by Abby Messer. After college, I set off for a new life in the PNW. Through years of research and patience, I was sure that Central Oregon was destined to be my home. I enjoy exploring, paddle boarding, marble hunting, and the local foodie scene. Abby provides psychotherapy to people with intellectual or developmental disabilities and other at-risk populations. She aspires to someday combine her passion for goats/agriculture with her passion for therapy work. The ideal dream? A non-profit therapy farm offering vocational growth opportunities on a farm store; purpose and skill building through crafting farm products; nature-based therapy in a gorgeous location with a garden; animal-assisted therapy with the help of the goats and other critters; individual therapy on-site; and group therapy sessions and wellness camps offered regularly with special focuses. Why Do We Do It? Abby has a long history with goats. At age eight, I began feeding bottle babies at our neighbor's house - our neighbor, who was Wisconsin's largest dairy goat farm. After spending many mornings and after school hours feeding up to 2,000 kids, I was promoted to a milker. Mornings and nights, I milked the entire herd. In my high school years, I took on more serious roles at the farm: scheduling staff, performing medical procedures, assuring quality control of the milk, and watching over the farm when the owners were not home. At the age of eight, I also received my first goat. Believe it or not, a Nubian! I grew a small herd of about 20 goats and showed through 4-H and then FFA. I also attended ADGA-sanctioned shows and learned the art of genetics. It was just at age sixteen that I experienced my hardest lesson in goat health. My entire herd became ill. If a goat did not pass from CAE, it was affected and died due to Johne's - which unknowingly lived in the walls of our wooden barn from a previous herd of animals. I took two years off from goats and quickly knew I needed my fix. I was gifted a Nigerian Dwarf for graduation and fell in love with the breed. Within four years, I had rebuilt a herd, re-fell in love with the "goat life", and reentered the show world. Unfortunately, I needed to continue onto college. I dispersed my herd and promised to find my way back again. Fast-forward five years, and I was purchasing my first home in Central Oregon. Before the paperwork was completed on the home, I had reservations and deposits down on three goats. I dove head first into all performance programs - milk testing, showing, and linear appraisal - to made sure to jumpstart my new herd. I couldn't be more thankful for the friendships, both locally and on the other side of the state, that supported me in the rapid growth stage! Meet the Farmhands... The goats are certainly not the only critters. Pickle is the resident buddy. He's a Nubian wether that we have to keep the bucks company. Nubians started my love for goats when I was just 8 years old, so Pickle is our ode to history. I have two dogs that enjoy their backcountry lifestyle: Peeper and Chet. Peeper is a dachshund/beagle and catahoula mix - but weiner-beagle is thorough enough. He tries to be a grumpy old man, but he's just too happy for it! Chet is the smartest helper by far! He is a heeler, corgi, and border collie mix. It's intriguing to see his intellect and to see how he learns new things - although he doesn't usually apply himself well. The queen of the household is Tinkerbell and Thomas O'Malley is her jester. Tinkerbell is a tortoiseshell beauty. Rescued from a plastic bag on the road, she is quite fearful of guests, but loves to cuddle when the house calms down. Thomas is a playful troublemaker. If he isn't up to fetching chipmunks or bothering Tinkerbell, he's probably encouraging the pups to find a delinquent activity to join him in.

  • Policies | Broken Top Goats

An overview of our sales, kidding, breeding, and health policies as well as links to PDF versions. Sales Policy & Herd Management All Broken Top Forms Current Breedings For Sale Please read over the sales terms. Our goal is to make certain that you get the goat that you desire and that there are no misunderstandings in the sale process. Remember, the sale of a goat is not the end of your relationship with Broken Top Farm, but the beginning! Feel free to ask questions and keep in contact. Money Matters PDF Broken Top has the right to refuse any purchaser for any reason, but will aim for transparency. In order to reserve your choice of kid, we require you inform us the exact breeding or general want (“2 wethers from any breeding”, for example). We will also want your contact info, name, location, and herd name if possible. Once kids are born, those on the reservation list will be contacted. At this time, should you decide to move forward, a non-refundable deposit of 50% down is required to hold your kid. If it is not received within 24 hours of verbal agreement, we will move onto the next name on the reservation list. Preference in sales/reservations will be given to performance herds or youth actively showing in 4-H or FFA. This is to grow our herd reputation and merit - as well as encourage youth to stay active in their goat projects with quality animals. This means that if one person requests a doeling, but is not on any performance programs. Another person requests a doeling one month later but is on performance programs. Then the second person will have the first choice in kid. Discounts may be available for youth actively showing and raising goats for 4-H or FFA, performance herds (DHI, LA, or showing), and multiple goat purchases. Inquire if you might fall under one of these categories! Prices are set and we will not “bargain” with you. Our animals are priced on merit, quality, and genetics. Broken Top may also retain any kids above any reservations or change our minds on animals for sale for any reason at any time – if you have a deposit we will refund for this reason only. Sometimes evaluations of youngstock take several weeks due to maturing and growth. If we are unsure which kid will be retained, we will be transparent in that and notify you when we are sure of the kid that will be yours. Kids can be picked up once they are on two bottles a day (usually around 3 weeks of age). If you can show knowledge, experience, or have a mentor you are regularly learning with, I may consider letting a healthy kid leave earlier on the bottle. Pick up will be planned with the purchaser at time of deposit. If pick up is more than 30 days from deposit date, additional costs may incur for care, feed, and boarding at $5 per day. If the animal is not picked up at agreed upon timeframe, the animal will be considered surrendered, deposit retained, and next purchaser pursued. If you are purchasing a doe of breeding age, you may request she be bred to a buck of your choice for free before leaving the farm. We cannot guarantee the breeding will "take" and therefore this is a one-time service. Per ADGA rules, any kids who are the result of a doe purchased and bred by us must carry the “Broken Top” herd name and have ear tattoos of the farm where the kids were physically born (the buyer's tattoos). Payment is required in full before the animal leaves our possession. We accept Venmo, Cash, Check, Zelle, and PayPal (family and friends only). You may pick up your goat at the farm or we can arrange a meet-up at a show. To see what shows are planned for Broken Top Farm, check out the "Show Results" page. If for any reason, you wish to get rid of your animals, please consider informing us so we may look into purchasing back or just so we can follow our progeny. Kid Care PDF All of Broken Top's kids are removed from the dam immediately after kidding to place them directly in our care, under closer supervision, and growing a bond with humans. We allow them to live in the house up to one week if weather is inclement or cold – as Central Oregon has some harsh nights. If applicable, you will be given a "goody bag" of some feed that the animal eats, paperwork, basic care guide, and supplies for next vaccination or medication if needed. Should the weather be harsh or the kids show anything less than thriving health, rest assured that the kids will have a temporary residence in the house until deemed safe to return outside. We do our best to ensure we raise healthy, strong kids. We will only let kids leave with a clean bill of health - but once the kid leaves our farm, we can no longer be responsible for its health. You are always welcome to reach out with questions or for advice and we will support as able. Kids are fed colostrum until the dam stops producing it (or colostrum replacer will be utilized) and then raw goat’s milk from our animals (or whole cow’s milk from the store or 50/50 whole cow’s milk and goat’s milk) as follows, but we try to get to two a day as soon as possible for our personal schedule. Amounts and timelines often vary based on kids’ size, strength, health, and intelligence level: Day 1 – 4oz, 4x per day (including colostrum/colostrum replacer) Day 2 & 3 - 6oz, 3x per day Day 4 & 5 – 7oz, 3x per day Day 6 & 7 – 8oz, 3x per day Week 2 to Week 10 – 12oz, 2x per day Week 10 to Week 12 – 12oz, 1x per day In addition to bottles, kids are offered grain and alfalfa from one week of age. They often do not eat grain immediately and it is left free-choice until they grow interest. At which time it is given at a rate of ¼ cup of grain mixture per kid twice a day until approximately 6 months of age. They also will have free access to leafy alfalfa and some grass hay starting at 1 week until at least 6 months of age, at which point they transition to orchard only. Kids are separated by sex at 8 weeks. We vaccinate and preventatively treat for coccidia. All of our kids are disbudded prior to one week of age. If you purchase a wether, the deed will be done around 12 weeks of age. We do not sell single kids unless you can prove you have other goats already in your possession of similar age. This is for the benefit of the goat, as they are social and need friends! We will not be selling non-registered, in-tact buck kids unless you have separate housing/pens and a non-female “buddy” for them, to prevent unwanted pet breedings and ensure well-being. We will be particular in selling registered bucklings, for the integrity of breed improvement. We reserve naming rights for all kids but are happy to take suggestions, as they carry the Broken Top herd name. You may use any “barn” name you prefer if the one we choose isn’t your style! “Kid Clinics” are offered throughout weaning season at set dates. We pick dates that work with the general schedule of kids born, based on their 3-week vaccine and preventative. There will be a specific time on the date selected and we are unable to accommodate. These generally are offered for 6-week CDT/Coccidia prevention and 12-week banding. Free disbudding touch-ups will be offered at these clinics. Clinics will have a set fee for service that needs to be paid on the day of the clinic. Herd Health PDF All Animals: Free choice Duraferm Concept Aid mineral, baking soda, Zinpro, and Icelandic kelp as available. Unlimited water cleaned weekly, with tank heaters in winter months. Milkers: Alfalfa and orchard grass for roughage. Grain is offered on the stand at an average rate of 1lb per milking, per doe – but may be adjusted if they show a higher demand or have excess fleshing. Pregnant Does: Alfalfa introduced 60 days from kidding and orchard grass for roughage. Grain is offered twice daily at during the last two months of lactation as ½ lb of grain per doe. Dry Does: Orchard grass for roughage. No grain and no alfalfa are offered. Bucks: Orchard grass and alfalfa at a 4:1 ratio to maintain a proper calcium to phosphorous balance. No grain is offered. Feed Mix: Broken Top mixes a custom grain blend weekly, the current mix is below: 3 parts Rolled Oats 3 parts Crushed Barley 2 parts Black Oil Sunflower Seed 2 part Haystack Goat Top Dress: fenugreek seeds, flax seed powder The herd is given CDT annually - does 1 month prior to kidding and all others in spring around the same time. A BoSe shot and Vitamin ADE shot are also given 2x per year to increase herd health due to living in a selenium-deficient area (always check your area’s levels before following our regimen). Kids are given BoSe at birth and 6 months. Pregnant does get BoSe 1 month prior to kidding. We deworm/coccidia prevention kids at 3 weeks and 6 weeks with Zuricox. If a kid shows signs of weakness or failure to thrive, they may be assessed for other worm loads or given an additional dose of Zuricox. Copper boluses are given as needed based on condition. Broken Top’s care schedule and herd health booklet can be viewed on our “Resources” page. We are a CAE, CL, and Johne's free herd. We assure these measures by only buying health-tested animals and by blood testing our adult herd annually. You may request these results at any time, purchasing or not. We follow biosecurity measures with visitors and when traveling to shows. Health certificates/vet checks beyond our annual blood tests or the animal’s individual care sheet can be done at your request and expense. Genetically transmittable conditions (myotonia, carpal hyperextension, etc.) are monitored and we do not allow them in our herd if present. We will be transparent in any known factors when discussing a sale, but will only speak to known facts, not hearsay. If an animal originally purchased from Broken Top develops a genetic condition, we offer 50% off a replacement animal with veterinary proof of said condition (DNA testing, x-rays, etc.). All of our does are on milk testing and we participate in Linear Appraisal when available. The scores and production records can be found on our website as we are able to update it, as well as ADGA Genetics and CBCD websites. We attend many shows every year and any results will be posted on the “Show Results” page. Any outstanding wins will be listed directly under the animal's page. Pricing PDF We utilize a personal pricing "calculator". There is no formal evaluation or way to add up an animal’s value. We base prices on genetic quality, transmitability (ETA/PTI) scores, DHIR milk results, linear appraisal scores, show records, age, potential, and market demand. Note: $50 discount for youth. Youth must provide proof that they are already actively showing goats in FFA or 4-H. The discount will not apply if the youth "wants to begin showing". Unfortunately, many youth end up not pursuing goats after trying them or the parents take on roles as owners/caregivers. Our policy is to protect the animal and ensure the youth is already committed to dairy goats. Note: Discounts are often available for multiple animal purchases, please inquire as discounts vary. Note: Preferences for reservations and sales will always be given to performance herds that are actively participating in DHI, LA, or showing. We are happy to mentor you in these programs if you wish to be involved. Note: All prices are tentative. Some animals may be priced more for a variety of reasons including - personal value by us as a breeder, LA scores, DHI results, or other performance-based records and accomplishments.

He stands perfectly uphill and shows depth throughout the chest and barrel. His feet and legs stand strong and show excellent curvature in the rear. He is flat and wide across the toppling and into the rump. From hock to hock, he is wide without sacrificing leg strength. His dam has a beautiful udder with correct shape, placement, attachments, and thirds. We'll see how he matures, but right now I can't pick anything negative about Yoshi to improve upon, other than he is a smaller-statured guy. However, his genetics aren't small-statured, so I feel he's a great buck to keep heights in regulation without making a "fragile" animal! • Services | Broken Top Goats

An overview and explanation of services we may be available to help mentor, teach, and provide to fellow goat owners both in our area and nationwide. Offered Services We know a thing or two, because we've seen a thing or two. Broken Top understands the value of mentorship, education, and friendship in the goat business. Due to this, we offer knowledge and help along the way, see below for prices and information. Suggested prices are listed, and are what we generally ask. However, we believe that it is more important to help each other than make a profit. Pay what you can. *Our only limit is that if you are further than 30 miles for us, we may ask for a small amount of money to cover gas. *Any supplies can either be provided by you or we can purchase if you send money prior to services. Mentorship Suggested Price: FREE Mentorship is priceless. All of us began with zero knowledge and learned along the way - be it a parent, friend, or sibling. Not all of us have natural mentors available, so we reach out a hand and offer an insight to our noggins. I always tell everyone this one tidbit, and it must be said here in the "mentorship" category. "If someone tells you that there is a specific way to do something, don't listen." Goat husbandry varies by location, goals, finances, and general ability. We share our own experience, with our own goals, and our own lifestyle. We will always tell you options based on our experience - and if we have none in mind, we'll tell you that too. Hoof Trimming Suggested Price: $5 per goat Trimming hooves is something that goats simply need. The good news is that it's a breeze to do! When I trim hooves I will always do any corrective work and let you know of any needs (hoof rot, scald, or injuries, etc). Another part of hoof trimming that I'll do, that others may not, is TEACH YOU! It's so important that you learn to care for your animals. You can grow a bond, gain confidence, and fall even more in love with this goat world of ours. Photo Credit: Backyard Goats - Gail Damerow Photo Credit: Raising Goats for Dummies, Cheryl K. Smith Blood Draws Suggested Price: $10 per goat While not absolutely necessary, blood draws (in my opinion) should be a part of goat husbandry. As always, I am happy to teach you how to do blood draws and offer you opportunities to draw blood while I'm present (every now and then a goat will have a big, juicy vein - just perfect for a beginner!) Some diseases that can be spread by goats are severe and have no set cure, only management (and some even lack that). However, we can avoid these diseases in our animals and help lessen the prevalence in the country if we all do our part and test. The main diseases we test for are CAE, CL, and Johnes. - CAE is caprine arthritis encephalitis. It causes a swelling in joints and brain tissue and leads to a prolonged death due to lentivirus. - CL is caseous lymphadenitis. It is a chronic bacterial disease that causes large, pus-filled abscesses both internally and externally in the goats which reoccur. - Johnes is a wasting disease. It is a gastrointestinal infection and causes an animal to waste away over time - being unable to sustain its own body. Vaccinations/Scheduled Care Suggested Price: $5 per goat Vaccinations, worming, and other regular care can ensure we don't run into avoidable illnesses in our herds. While my practices do not align with everyone's - as we all have different goals and beliefs - I do offer my care schedule to the public for both transparency and mentorship. I am not a certified veterinarian, I only offer these services as a friend and mentor. That being said, I am happy to help you learn how to give vaccinations and complete regular care tasks. I'm happy to talk about what needs your herd has, work with your goals and beliefs, and ensure any needs are met for you and your goats. Any scheduled care services come with a complimentary chat and typed up care schedule for you to use, specific to your herd and your goals. Photo Credit: Peace Corps Information Collection and Exchange Banding Suggested Price: $5 per goat (add $5 if over 6 months) Banding is the process done in order to wether a goat. A special and tight rubber band is placed around the sack, with both testes below the band. Over time (approximately 2 weeks) the band will cut off blood flow and the testes will fall off. We can help you learn how to do this and how to find the supplies needed if you'd like! As a small "plug" on our personal beliefs - we think that registered bucks should be the best of the best. If we leave a buck intact, we believe he will build a better breed. There are certainly "levels" of herds. Some are beginner, some are hobby, and some are performance. As a general rule, if a buckling stays intact it is either on par with the best of the breed or leaving the farm unregistered - as a pet breeding buck. Any buckling sold intact comes with abundant information and education around buck-keeping. But of course, every herd has their own values, beliefs, and purpose. We will support yours! Photo Credit: Raising Goats for Dummies, Cheryl K. Smith Dehorning/Disbudding Suggested Price: $15 per goat While some choose to keep horns on their goats, we do not at Broken Top. Our reasons revolve around safety and performance requirements. If you would like to talk about benefits, we are always happy to! As always, we also allow and encourage you to learn and try out disbudding! Disbudding is done when the kids are young, preferably under two weeks - but definitely possible to do later. A hot disbudding iron is used to burn copper-colored rings around the horn base and cauterize the nerve ending that allow horn growth. We also like to ensure the "cap" is removed and cauterize below it to ensure no scurs grow over time. Dehorning is done when horns grow after disbudding fails to fully cauterize nerves or the goat is never disbudded. This process can be a bit gruesome and has health risks for the goat due to potential blood loss. We urge veterinary help if removing full horns (but can give advice of home procedures). We are willing to help file a groove and place a band on fully grown horns. While it will not fully remove them, over time it will remove them as far down as we can get the band to sit. Scurs, as long as they are small, can be much easier to remove. As far as services offered, we limit our "dehorning" to scurs. We will want photos before agreeing to complete the dehorning. Essentially, we will slowly burn layers off of the scur and remove the cap. We will then cauterize as close to the skull as possible. We may need to come back for further removals - as larger scurs might have to be done in "layers". Verification/Milk Testing (DHI) Suggested Price: $20 per visit DHI Milk Testing Programs are a great way to improve your herd. To have a well-rounded dairy goat, you need to look at its linear traits (LA), show ability and presentation, and milk production statistics. For this reason we fully support herds in getting on milk test. We can help you get started, ensure you stay on track, and be your tester as needed (usually monthly). Have a tester but want a verification test done for Top Ten consideration? We can stop by for that too!

  • Kid Commit Program | Broken Top Goats

We offer a program that allows youth in the PNW to win a genetically proven, performance doeling from local and prestigious herds. This program provides life-long mentorship and guidance for the youth. Kid Commit Program Our Kid Commit Program is an annual program, free entry, for youth to win a show-quality animal of their own. It consists of an essay, a required signature form, and a few other small rules all posted in detail below. The "board" and founders consist of Broken Top Farm and IvyRidge Nubians. Broken Top and IvyRidge donate their own kids, as well as our rotating "donor" farms that make this program possible since 2022! About the Program Abby Messer of Broken Top Farm began her adventure with dairy goats as a young 4-H-er, FFA member, and eventually an adult member of ADGA. Julie Rosqvist-Gerard at IvyRidge Nubians has invested many years to 4-H, both as a leader and a parent, and owns her own successful herd of ADGA Nubians. Broken Top Farm and good friends, IvyRidge Nubians, herein called “the board”, hope to continue this tradition of encouraging our youth to remain active and passionate in their goat projects by offering a quality, proven animal. We hope to promote interest in dairy goats and their contribution to agriculture in our region. For this reason, we are offering a competitive essay program for youth to win a doeling. This competition, started in 2022, is for Oregon, Washington, and Idaho youth and consists of an essay with a minimum of 100 words about why they would like to own a dairy goat, how they would care for it (shelter, food, routine care, vaccinations, milking), what they would do competitively (shows, linear appraisal, milk testing) with it, any previous goat ownership experiences, and goals for their long-term future with dairy goats. We hope to have the youth capture why they love and are invested in goats. Youth are encouraged to talk about their mentors, their clubs, memberships, and any other information that will validate their commitment to raising dairy goats long-term. Pictures, photos, or special inclusions are allowed and welcomed to show their passion. We will evaluate essays on the level of commitment to dairy goats in the longer term, while taking spelling and grammar into account. Please retain a copy of your essay, as we will not be able to ensure copies once submitted. Once a winner is chosen, we will make every effort possible to contact them for the next 30 days. After 30 days without contact, the win will be forfeited. Winners will have to coordinate with the donor farm, whose information they will be provided, to pick up the animal at the donor’s farm or arrange to pick up at a show if possible. Pick-up must occur within the agreed-upon timeframe; if not, the donor farm will notify the board, who will contact winners to inform them that their win was forfeited. Outside of extenuating circumstances, once a win is forfeited, the youth may not enter the competition again. Program Rules and Form Youth must be between the ages of 10 – 17 as of January 1 of the entry year. Youth must reside in the state of Oreg on, Washington, or Idaho at the time of application Entries will be accepted from January 1st – March 31st Entry form, essay, and all signatures must be enclosed in the entry packet Youth must be members of 4-H, FFA, ADGA, MDGA, AGS, or another organization Youth must have owned goats and actively participate in their perspective organization in the last year One youth, per family, per year may win. However, siblings are still always encouraged to apply Youth may only win once Winners must claim their goat and have arrangements made with donor within one month (May 1st ) of the winner being chosen around April 1 of entry year Winners are required to show their animals in a 4-H, FFA, ADGA, AGS, or other show in the calendar year of winning If an animal won through the program is to be sold or rehomed for any reason, donor retains first right of refusal and must be notified Youth must give updates on the animal to donor at 6 months of age and one year of age Applicant Form Questions?
