- Services | Broken Top Goats
Offered Services We know a thing or two, because we've seen a thing or two. Broken Top understands the value of mentorship, education, and friendship in the goat business. Due to this, we offer knowledge and help along the way, see below for prices and information. Suggested prices are listed, and are what we generally ask. However, we believe that it is more important to help each other than make a profit. Pay what you can. *Our only limit is that if you are further than 30 miles for us, we may ask for a small amount of money to cover gas. *Any supplies can either be provided by you or we can purchase if you send money prior to services. Mentorship Suggested Price: FREE Mentorship is priceless. All of us began with zero knowledge and learned along the way - be it a parent, friend, or sibling. Not all of us have natural mentors available, so we reach out a hand and offer an insight to our noggins. I always tell everyone this one tidbit, and it must be said here in the "mentorship" category. "If someone tells you that there is a specific way to do something, don't listen." Goat husbandry varies by location, goals, finances, and general ability. We share our own experience, with our own goals, and our own lifestyle. We will always tell you options based on our experience - and if we have none in mind, we'll tell you that too. Hoof Trimming Suggested Price: $5 per goat Trimming hooves is something that goats simply need. The good news is that it's a breeze to do! When I trim hooves I will always do any corrective work and let you know of any needs (hoof rot, scald, or injuries, etc). Another part of hoof trimming that I'll do, that others may not, is TEACH YOU! It's so important that you learn to care for your animals. You can grow a bond, gain confidence, and fall even more in love with this goat world of ours. Photo Credit: Backyard Goats - Gail Damerow Photo Credit: Raising Goats for Dummies, Cheryl K. Smith Blood Draws Suggested Price: $10 per goat While not absolutely necessary, blood draws (in my opinion) should be a part of goat husbandry. As always, I am happy to teach you how to do blood draws and offer you opportunities to draw blood while I'm present (every now and then a goat will have a big, juicy vein - just perfect for a beginner!) Some diseases that can be spread by goats are severe and have no set cure, only management (and some even lack that). However, we can avoid these diseases in our animals and help lessen the prevalence in the country if we all do our part and test. The main diseases we test for are CAE, CL, and Johnes. - CAE is caprine arthritis encephalitis. It causes a swelling in joints and brain tissue and leads to a prolonged death due to lentivirus. - CL is caseous lymphadenitis. It is a chronic bacterial disease that causes large, pus-filled abscesses both internally and externally in the goats which reoccur. - Johnes is a wasting disease. It is a gastrointestinal infection and causes an animal to waste away over time - being unable to sustain its own body. Vaccinations/Scheduled Care Suggested Price: $5 per goat Vaccinations, worming, and other regular care can ensure we don't run into avoidable illnesses in our herds. While my practices do not align with everyone's - as we all have different goals and beliefs - I do offer my care schedule to the public for both transparency and mentorship. I am not a certified veterinarian, I only offer these services as a friend and mentor. That being said, I am happy to help you learn how to give vaccinations and complete regular care tasks. I'm happy to talk about what needs your herd has, work with your goals and beliefs, and ensure any needs are met for you and your goats. Any scheduled care services come with a complimentary chat and typed up care schedule for you to use, specific to your herd and your goals. Photo Credit: Peace Corps Information Collection and Exchange Banding Suggested Price: $5 per goat (add $5 if over 6 months) Banding is the process done in order to wether a goat. A special and tight rubber band is placed around the sack, with both testes below the band. Over time (approximately 2 weeks) the band will cut off blood flow and the testes will fall off. We can help you learn how to do this and how to find the supplies needed if you'd like! As a small "plug" on our personal beliefs - we think that registered bucks should be the best of the best. If we leave a buck intact, we believe he will build a better breed. There are certainly "levels" of herds. Some are beginner, some are hobby, and some are performance. As a general rule, if a buckling stays intact it is either on par with the best of the breed or leaving the farm unregistered - as a pet breeding buck. Any buckling sold intact comes with abundant information and education around buck-keeping. But of course, every herd has their own values, beliefs, and purpose. We will support yours! Photo Credit: Raising Goats for Dummies, Cheryl K. Smith Dehorning/Disbudding Suggested Price: $15 per goat While some choose to keep horns on their goats, we do not at Broken Top. Our reasons revolve around safety and performance requirements. If you would like to talk about benefits, we are always happy to! As always, we also allow and encourage you to learn and try out disbudding! Disbudding is done when the kids are young, preferably under two weeks - but definitely possible to do later. A hot disbudding iron is used to burn copper-colored rings around the horn base and cauterize the nerve ending that allow horn growth. We also like to ensure the "cap" is removed and cauterize below it to ensure no scurs grow over time. Dehorning is done when horns grow after disbudding fails to fully cauterize nerves or the goat is never disbudded. This process can be a bit gruesome and has health risks for the goat due to potential blood loss. We urge veterinary help if removing full horns (but can give advice of home procedures). We are willing to help file a groove and place a band on fully grown horns. While it will not fully remove them, over time it will remove them as far down as we can get the band to sit. Scurs, as long as they are small, can be much easier to remove. As far as services offered, we limit our "dehorning" to scurs. We will want photos before agreeing to complete the dehorning. Essentially, we will slowly burn layers off of the scur and remove the cap. We will then cauterize as close to the skull as possible. We may need to come back for further removals - as larger scurs might have to be done in "layers". Verification/Milk Testing (DHI) Suggested Price: $20 per visit DHI Milk Testing Programs are a great way to improve your herd. To have a well-rounded dairy goat, you need to look at its linear traits (LA), show ability and presentation, and milk production statistics. For this reason we fully support herds in getting on milk test. We can help you get started, ensure you stay on track, and be your tester as needed (usually monthly). Have a tester but want a verification test done for Top Ten consideration? We can stop by for that too!
- Broken Top Nigerian Dwarf Goats - Oregon
Inspired by my childhood AGDA herd, Broken Top Farm - established in 2020 - is a hobby farm of Nigerian Dwarfs. Broken Top values quality show animals that have sweet, pet temperaments. Broken Top participates in shows across the Pacific Northwest, Linear Appraisal, and DHI Milk Testing Programs. We are ADGA Plus and ANDDA members. We test all animals over 1 year of age annually for CAE, CL, and Johnes, and are negative annually since October 2021. The owner, Abby, enjoys judging youth shows and takes pride in the youth supported through the annual Kid Commit Program. I offer mentorship, hoof trimming/corrective trimming, blood draws, banding, ultrasound clinics, shaving, and vaccinations! I also am a youth judge for 4-H and FFA shows and am happy to discuss helping your youth with a judge that "gets" their project! We have a "suggested" price, for the services, but it's more about growing a community and supporting each other. I also have some farm products available as we are able. They vary in availability based on how busy farm life is so ask before ordering: pounded metal name tags, handmade soap, chapsticks, bath bombs, shower fizzies, pet treats, custom forms for record-keeping, and more as we learn new skills! Reach out for more info. I moved to Central Oregon due to a life-long love of the Pacific NorthWest. When I drove that loaded U-Haul over the desert, Broken Top greeted me on the horizon and tears filled my eyes. I hade made it. As I explored the area, I fell in love with the values, adventure, and spirit. A climb to Broken Top Mountain, specifically No Name Lake, is my favorite feat in the Cascade Range. I am more than welcome to discuss sales, provide guidance, and visit farms. Reach out and we can chat! Welcome to the Broken Top herd! - About Us | Broken Top Goats
About Us Who Are We? Broken Top Nigerian Dwarf Goats is owned and operated by Abby Messer. After college, I set off for a new life in the PNW. Through years of research and patience, I was sure that Central Oregon was destined to be my home. I enjoy exploring, paddle boarding, marble hunting, and the local foodie scene. Abby provides psychotherapy to people with intellectual or developmental disabilities and other at-risk populations. She aspires to someday combine her passion for goats/agriculture with her passion for therapy work. The ideal dream? A non-profit therapy farm offering vocational growth opportunities on a farm store; purpose and skill building through crafting farm products; nature-based therapy in a gorgeous location with a garden; animal-assisted therapy with the help of the goats and other critters; individual therapy on-site; and group therapy sessions and wellness camps offered regularly with special focuses. Why Do We Do It? Abby has a long history with goats. At age eight, I began feeding bottle babies at our neighbor's house - our neighbor, who was Wisconsin's largest dairy goat farm. After spending many mornings and after school hours feeding up to 2,000 kids, I was promoted to a milker. Mornings and nights, I milked the entire herd. In my high school years, I took on more serious roles at the farm: scheduling staff, performing medical procedures, assuring quality control of the milk, and watching over the farm when the owners were not home. At the age of eight, I also received my first goat. Believe it or not, a Nubian! I grew a small herd of about 20 goats and showed through 4-H and then FFA. I also attended ADGA-sanctioned shows and learned the art of genetics. It was just at age sixteen that I experienced my hardest lesson in goat health. My entire herd became ill. If a goat did not pass from CAE, it was affected and died due to Johne's - which unknowingly lived in the walls of our wooden barn from a previous herd of animals. I took two years off from goats and quickly knew I needed my fix. I was gifted a Nigerian Dwarf for graduation and fell in love with the breed. Within four years, I had rebuilt a herd, re-fell in love with the "goat life", and reentered the show world. Unfortunately, I needed to continue onto college. I dispersed my herd and promised to find my way back again. Fast-forward five years, and I was purchasing my first home in Central Oregon. Before the paperwork was completed on the home, I had reservations and deposits down on three goats. I dove head first into all performance programs - milk testing, showing, and linear appraisal - to made sure to jumpstart my new herd. I couldn't be more thankful for the friendships, both locally and on the other side of the state, that supported me in the rapid growth stage! Meet the Farmhands... The goats are certainly not the only critters. Pickle is the resident buddy. He's a Nubian wether that we have to keep the bucks company. Nubians started my love for goats when I was just 8 years old, so Pickle is our ode to history. I have two dogs that enjoy their backcountry lifestyle: Peeper and Chet. Peeper is a dachshund/beagle and catahoula mix - but weiner-beagle is thorough enough. He tries to be a grumpy old man, but he's just too happy for it! Chet is the smartest helper by far! He is a heeler, corgi, and border collie mix. It's intriguing to see his intellect and to see how he learns new things - although he doesn't usually apply himself well. The queen of the household is Tinkerbell and Thomas O'Malley is her jester. Tinkerbell is a tortoiseshell beauty. Rescued from a plastic bag on the road, she is quite fearful of guests, but loves to cuddle when the house calms down. Thomas is a playful troublemaker. If he isn't up to fetching chipmunks or bothering Tinkerbell, he's probably encouraging the pups to find a delinquent activity to join him in.

- Kid Commit Program | Broken Top Goats
Kid Commit Program Our Kid Commit Program is an annual program, free entry, for youth to win a show-quality animal of their own. It consists of an essay, a required signature form, and a few other small rules all posted in detail below. The "board" and founders consist of Broken Top Farm and IvyRidge Nubians. Broken Top and IvyRidge donate their own kids, as well as our rotating "donor" farms that make this program possible since 2022! About the Program Abby Messer of Broken Top Farm began her adventure with dairy goats as a young 4-H-er, FFA member, and eventually an adult member of ADGA. Julie Rosqvist-Gerard at IvyRidge Nubians has invested many years to 4-H, both as a leader and a parent, and owns her own successful herd of ADGA Nubians. Broken Top Farm and good friends, IvyRidge Nubians, herein called “the board”, hope to continue this tradition of encouraging our youth to remain active and passionate in their goat projects by offering a quality, proven animal. We hope to promote interest in dairy goats and their contribution to agriculture in our region. For this reason, we are offering a competitive essay program for youth to win a doeling. This competition, started in 2022, is for Oregon, Washington, and Idaho youth and consists of an essay with a minimum of 100 words about why they would like to own a dairy goat, how they would care for it (shelter, food, routine care, vaccinations, milking), what they would do competitively (shows, linear appraisal, milk testing) with it, any previous goat ownership experiences, and goals for their long-term future with dairy goats. We hope to have the youth capture why they love and are invested in goats. Youth are encouraged to talk about their mentors, their clubs, memberships, and any other information that will validate their commitment to raising dairy goats long-term. Pictures, photos, or special inclusions are allowed and welcomed to show their passion. We will evaluate essays on the level of commitment to dairy goats in the longer term, while taking spelling and grammar into account. Please retain a copy of your essay, as we will not be able to ensure copies once submitted. Once a winner is chosen, we will make every effort possible to contact them for the next 30 days. After 30 days without contact, the win will be forfeited. Winners will have to coordinate with the donor farm, whose information they will be provided, to pick up the animal at the donor’s farm or arrange to pick up at a show if possible. Pick-up must occur within the agreed-upon timeframe; if not, the donor farm will notify the board, who will contact winners to inform them that their win was forfeited. Outside of extenuating circumstances, once a win is forfeited, the youth may not enter the competition again. Program Rules and Form Youth must be between the ages of 10 – 17 as of January 1 of the entry year. Youth must reside in the state of Oreg on, Washington, or Idaho at the time of application Entries will be accepted from January 1st – March 31st Entry form, essay, and all signatures must be enclosed in the entry packet Youth must be members of 4-H, FFA, ADGA, MDGA, AGS, or another organization Youth must have owned goats and actively participate in their perspective organization in the last year One youth, per family, per year may win. However, siblings are still always encouraged to apply Youth may only win once Winners must claim their goat and have arrangements made with donor within one month (May 1st ) of the winner being chosen around April 1 of entry year Winners are required to show their animals in a 4-H, FFA, ADGA, AGS, or other show in the calendar year of winning If an animal won through the program is to be sold or rehomed for any reason, donor retains first right of refusal and must be notified Youth must give updates on the animal to donor at 6 months of age and one year of age Applicant Form Questions?
